Modern Water
Modern Water, owns, installs and operates world-leading membrane technologies and develops advanced systems for water and wastewater monitoring.
Our Membrane Process Division uses its world-leading Forward Osmosis (FO) technology platform in a number of membrane processes including: desalination, evaporative cooling systems, enhanced oil recovery and hydro osmotic power (HOP).
The Monitoring Division has developed some of the world’s most advanced systems for monitoring and improving water quality. It brings together Modern Water’s market-leading acute toxicity monitoring systems with the environmental and process monitoring products and technologies.

TOXICITY ANALYZER
Our Microtox® LX toxicity test system is the industry standard for laboratory-based rapid toxicity screening and analysis. Microtox® FX is the portable, acute toxicity analyser used with the Microtox® technology. Modern Water’s new* Microtox® CTM is a site-based, broad range Continuous Toxicity Monitor (CTM).
Modern Water is expert in the design, development and provision of analytical instruments and technologies for monitoring toxicity in water, soil, food and industry. Our systems use bioluminescent bacteria to perform biosensor testing that detects the presence of toxic substances.
Biosensor tests using bioluminescent bacteria have been in use for more than 30 years and their capability in detecting toxic substances is well understood. They use the principle that certain strains of bacteria emit light when healthy. When they are exposed to toxic substances, the amount of light emitted reduces. The greater the toxicity of the sample, the lower the light emitted. Measuring changes in light between healthy bacteria and bacteria exposed to toxic substances will therefore indicate the presence of a toxin in a sample.
Our range of toxicity testing technologies is both industry-leading and ground-breaking.

MICROTOX LX
The Microtox® LX analyzer is a laboratory-based, temperature-controlled, self-calibrating photometer that measures acute toxicity.

MICROTOX FX
Microtox® FX portable toxicity monitor.
Microtox® FX is the portable toxicity analyzer used with the Microtox® technology. It is a simple, rapid, extremely responsive, portable water quality test system.

ONLINE CONTINUOUS TOXICITY MONITOR
Microtox® CTM
Modern Water’s new* Microtox® CTM is a site-based, broad range, Continuous Toxicity Monitor (CTM). It continuously measures the chemical toxicity of a water source, giving instant indication of water health.

TRACE METALS ANALYSIS TO 0.5μg/l
- Measuring trace metals in water, soil and food has always been a vital part of modern environmental monitoring. Voltammetry offers an internationally accepted alternative to laboratory analysis. Modern Water's PDV provides excellent on-site characterization of pollution hot spots and contamination sources.
- Single instrument can be configured to measure up to 24 different metals
- New tablet-based android app simplifies equipment use and increases portability - New!
- Analyze in the lab or the field down to 0.5 μg/L- below drinking water regulations for many target metals
- Standalone field instrument -compact, lightweight carrying case allows for field use
- Excellent Correlation with Laboratory Methods (AAS, ICP-MS) but much lower capital and operating costs.

MICROTRACE™ OVA7100
On-line metal monitor
Measuring trace metals in water streams, whether its drinking water, ground water, river water, factory effluent, soil washing or WWTP discharge is a vital part of modern environmental monitoring. Voltammetry offers an internationally accepted alternative to laboratory analysis or automatic samplers. Modern Water's range of OVA products are cost effective, accurate, simple to use ad easy to integrate into existing systems.
- Can be configured to monitor 23 different metals
- Very low detection levels (down to 0.1 μg/L*)
- High levels of accuracy and repeatability - Excellent Correlation with Laboratory Methods (AAS, ICP-MS)
- 24-hour monitoring at high frequency can identify and isolate events that daily average sampling may miss
- Short analysis times allow identification of events as they occur - laboratory analysis typically identifies an event only after it occurred
- Dual-cell option can measure up to 10 metals
- Programmable alarm and outputs for out-of-range samples or system faults.
- Pre-treatment options available to eliminate interfaces and allow total and dissolved concentrations to be monitored
What it detects?
- The OVA7100 can detect a range of metals (for example: As,Cd, Cr, Cu,Hg,Ni,Pb,Se,TI,Zn, and others) to single figure μg/l levels (typically 0.5μg/l). Colour or turbidity does not affect the method. Samples range from waste water, process water, river water to drinking water. Acid/uV digest and filtration are treatment options.
